ASTM A 36/ ASME SA36

This is the most popular ASTM structural steel specification for carbon steel shapes, plates and bars for welded and bolted construction of bridges, buildings and general purposes. It is not recommended where low temperature toughness is important. It has excellent welding properties and is suitable for drilling, punching, grinding and other machining and fabrication processes. it also bends easily.

Elongation18% min in 8” 21% min in 2” (for plates wider than 24”)

CSA G40.21 38W/260W

Steels of this type meet minimum strength requirements and are suitable for general welded construction where notch toughness at low temperatures is not a prime consideration.

CSA G40.21 44W/300W

Standard common weldable steel normally specified in building construction, it is not recommended where low temperature toughness is important. 44W can be flame cut, formed, drilled welded and machined by all normal means. When “T” is added to the grade, it will come with Charpy notch performance test results.

CSA G40.21 50W/350W

Used normally for HSS sections, where specific strength requirements are required. Suitable for general welded construction where notch toughness at low temperatures is not a design requirement. This grade comes in category ranges from CAT1 to CAT5 for Charpy performance test.

ASTM A 516 GRADE 70 / ASME SA 516 GRADE 70 AS ROLLED NACE MR0103/MR0175 BHN < 200

ASTM A516 covers steel plates of intermediate tensile strength for pressure vessels to be operated at atmospheric or lower temperature. The four grades offer excellent combinations of strength, weldability and toughness to permit designers flexibility in the design of pressure vessels coming under the jurisdiction of the ASME Pressure Vessel Code.

Mechanical Properties Metric
Tensile Strength 55 to 70 ksi

ASTM A 516 GRADE 70 / ASME SA 516 GRADE 70 NORMALIZED CVNL @-50F 15/12 FT.LBS NACE MR0103/MR0175 BHN < 200 FINE GRAIN / FULLY KILLED.

Excellent combinations of strength, weldability and toughness to permit designers flexibility in the design of pressure vessels coming under the jurisdiction of the ASME Pressure Vessel Code. The plates are produced from fully killed fine grained steels and in the normalized condition will meet the requirements of ASTM A300: 15 ft.lbs. energy at50°F on Charpy Unotch specimens.

ASTM A514 GRADE B,S QT-100 (ALGOMA 100 / HARDWEAR 400

ASTM A514 specification covers quenched and tempered alloy steel plates primarily for use in welded bridges and other structures.

CORROSION RESISTANCE

Some A514 steels have a corrosion resistance that is 4 to 6 times better than plain grade steels.

AR 400 (ALGOTUF 400 / BRINAR 400)

These steels are primarily intended to provide resistance to abrasive wear superior to that of ordinary structural quality steels. The “AR” material is intermediate carbon manganese steel with improved workability over carbon steel of the same hardness level.
